How I Went From Panic Disorder to Coaching Hundreds of Men: The Brutal Truth About Learning Game

How I Went From Panic Disorder to Coaching Hundreds of Men: The Brutal Truth About Learning Game

I didn't kiss a single girl throughout all of high school. Not one. And it wasn't because I wasn't trying — I was obsessed with getting a girlfriend, thought about it constantly. The lowest point? My crush literally laughed in my face and told me I wasn't really a man. My dad's only dating advice was threatening to kill me if I didn't use a condom. Nobody taught me how to talk to women.

I had zero social skills and crippling anxiety. At 18, I got diagnosed with panic disorder. The first time I tried approaching girls at a mall, my anxiety spiked so badly I was certain I was having a heart attack. I went to urgent care and got an EKG.

But I eventually figured it out. I've now coached hundreds of men in person — guys with autism, panic disorder, severe social anxiety, men who had never approached a woman in their life. I've watched them completely transform their dating lives, whether that meant losing their virginity, getting a long-term girlfriend, or dating multiple women at once. If I had to go back to absolute zero and start over today, here's exactly what I would do.

Understand the Real Problem

Most men think their dating problem is that women don't like them. That's rarely the actual problem. The real problem is that they never give women the chance to decide.

There's a concept I call self-rejection, and it's the thing that kept me stuck longer than anything else. Self-rejection is when you decide the answer is no before you've even asked the question. You see a girl you're attracted to, your brain runs through every reason it won't work, and you do nothing. She never rejected you. You rejected yourself on her behalf.

I had a friend — let's call him Victor — who was charming, charismatic, genuinely funny. When we went out together, he'd take a girl home frequently. But the girls he took home were nowhere near as attractive as he was. I'd point out a beautiful woman across the bar, and he'd say 'Yeah, she's hot, let's go talk to her,' then walk in the opposite direction toward someone less appealing.

Victor was protecting his ego. He was unwilling to acknowledge what he was actually doing: deciding on her behalf that she wouldn't be interested. He only approached girls he thought were in his league, but in reality, those were well below his league. He never got rejected by the women he actually wanted because he never approached them. That's self-rejection, and it costs most men far more than actual rejection ever does.

"Self-rejection is when you decide the answer is no before you've even asked the question. She never rejected you. You rejected yourself on her behalf."

Build Your Approach Framework

Now that you know what the real problem is, you need a framework for actually solving it. Here's the mistake most men make at this stage: they think the answer is more preparation. More content, more theory, more studying until they feel ready.

I spent five years doing this. Five years of studying pickup without approaching a single girl. I can tell you with complete certainty: it does not work. Intellectual understanding and practical understanding are completely different things. You cannot watch your way to confidence.

I used to know a guy who had figured out what he thought was the perfect strategy. Whenever he met a girl, he'd tell her within the first five minutes that he was a Raytheon engineer making six figures. He'd literally say that. But here's what that communicated: the fact that he felt the need to prove his value implied he didn't think it was obvious. He was selling himself, and women can feel that instantly — not through logic, but through instinct.

First, get your mindset right. You are not trying to impress anyone. You are not performing. You're a man who sees a woman he finds attractive and decides to go find out if there's a connection. That's it. Low stakes, genuine curiosity. The moment you walk up trying to prove something, you've already lost.

Second, build momentum before you go for what you actually want. If you're like most men, you've seen thousands of women you wanted to approach but always made some excuse. That's become the default. You have momentum against taking action, inertia where it feels normal not to approach.

So if you think you're just going to go out and approach 20 women a night, find the hottest girl, and be very bold, think again. Once you're at the venue, extremely anxious in an overwhelming nightclub environment, and you see the hot girl surrounded by four friends including a couple guys who look like they'd beat the shit out of you, it's going to get very easy to feel paralyzed.

The Gradual Exposure System

Give 10 Compliments Start by complimenting girls as you walk by. 'I like your dress. I like your hair.' Whatever. Just say something and keep moving.
Do 10 Indirect Approaches Ask for directions, opinions, recommendations. Low-pressure conversations that get you comfortable starting interactions.
Do 10 Direct Approaches Now express genuine interest. Tell her you find her attractive and wanted to meet her. This is where real momentum builds.
Warm Up With Everyone Talk to the bartender, a group of guys near the entrance, an older woman sitting alone. Get your mouth moving and your social energy flowing before you approach the girl you really want.

This is the piece most men skip entirely, and it costs them more than anything else. Your social circuitry is like a cold engine — it needs to warm up before it runs smoothly. The man who walks into a bar and immediately expects to approach the most attractive woman in the room often ends up talking to no one because he's putting too much pressure on himself.

Approaching women is like riding a wave. You want to push yourself, but only as much as you can handle without paralyzing yourself. Every conversation you have lowers the stakes when you see a girl you really like because you're already in motion. You stop thinking about what you're doing and start just taking action. The first approach of any session is always the hardest. The tenth is almost effortless by comparison.

Find the Women

You've got the mindset, you've got the framework. Now you need to actually get in front of women consistently. This is where most men fail — not because they lack skill, but because they lack a system.

I spent years telling myself I'd go out and approach women when I felt ready. When my anxiety was better, when I'd studied enough and knew enough lines to never run out of things to say, when conditions were perfect. But those conditions never arrived. The readiness never came. I was waiting for a feeling that only comes from doing the thing, not from preparing to do it.

Pick three environments: one daytime (a park, mall, busy street), one social (bar, lounge, club), and one activity-based (dance class, run club, hobby group). Rotating between these keeps things fresh and exposes you to different types of interactions. Different environments build different skills.

Then commit to going out four times a week minimum. Not when you feel like it, not when conditions are perfect — four times a week on a schedule, just like you would if you wanted to lose weight by going to the gym. You wouldn't make progress if you told yourself 'I'll go when I feel like it.' You'd make progress with a schedule: Monday, Tuesday, Thursday, Saturday at 7:00 p.m.

I track my sessions in Google Calendar. Some of my clients use habit tracking apps. It doesn't matter what system you use. What matters is that it stops being something you're thinking about and becomes something you're committed to.

"Your nervous system learns through repetition, not through insight. You get good by accumulating hundreds of real interactions over months until your nervous system stops treating it like a threat and starts treating it like a normal Tuesday."

Master the Conversation

Most men think the conversation is the hard part. It's not. The approach is the hard part. Once you're actually talking to a woman, the pressure drops significantly. But there are a few things worth knowing that will make your conversations dramatically more effective.

First, stop trying to be interesting and start being interested. I knew a guy who was 6'3, shredded, looked like a model, and was a doctor. On paper, the most attractive man in any room. But whenever I saw him out, women would lose interest within minutes. He rarely smiled, took himself extremely seriously, talked about himself constantly, and showed almost no genuine curiosity about the person he was talking to.

He was trying so hard to seem impressive that he forgot to be present, and women felt it. Genuine curiosity about another person is one of the most attractive qualities a man can have, and it costs nothing. Ask real questions, listen to the answers, follow up on what she says. Be more interested in who she is than in what she thinks of you.

Second, lead the interaction. Women are attracted to men who know what they want and move toward it. Don't ask permission for everything. If the conversation is going well and you want her number, ask for her number. If you want to move to a different part of the bar, suggest it. If you want to see her again, say so directly. Leadership in small moments signals leadership in general. Hesitation and permission-seeking signals the opposite.

Third, learn to read the signals. Attraction is mostly nonverbal: strong eye contact, touching you, asking you questions, laughing more than the conversation warrants, playing with her hair, turning her body toward you. When you see these signs, escalate. Move things forward. Take the lead. Invite her to a different area of the bar. If you're not sure, create a situation where if she's not into you, she will politely decline, and now you know. For example, ask a girl to dance with you. If there's interest, you're now moving things forward. If there isn't, you're not going to waste time.

Get Your First Win Fast

The single most important thing in the early stages is getting proof that this works for you specifically. Not for some guy in a video — for you. I call this getting reference experiences. The moment your brain stops treating female attraction as a theoretical concept and starts treating it as something that actually happens to you, everything changes. The self-rejection starts to lose its grip because you have real evidence contradicting it.

The turning point for me came when I met a guy named Matt. Matt was naturally good with women. He thought approaching girls was completely normal. He invited me out as his wing, and I watched him walk up to women in the same way most people order coffee — completely relaxed, no big deal, just a normal interaction.

At first, I was extremely nervous just watching him. But something started to shift. Being around someone who treated this as normal made me start to treat it as normal. My own beliefs started to update, not because someone told me to change them, but because I was watching real evidence in real time.

Within a couple of months, I approached a woman cold, she gave me her number, and we went on a date. I remember thinking: this actually works. Not in theory, but for me. That reference experience changed everything.

Take Action Now

Everything I just walked you through is useless if you don't actually do it. I know that sounds obvious, but the number one thing that separates men who transform their dating lives from men who stay stuck isn't intelligence, looks, money, or social skills. It's that they actually went out and did the uncomfortable thing instead of finding one more reason to wait.

I spent five years preparing to get ready to take action. Five years of content, books, courses, imaginary conversations, practice in my bedroom mirror — yes, really. None of it moved the needle. Not at all. The first approach I ever did, awkward and shaky and completely imperfect, did more for my confidence than all five years of studying combined.

Here's the thing about comfort zones: the edge of them is where everything you want actually lives. The dating life you want, the confidence you want, the version of yourself you're trying to become — none of it is inside the comfortable, familiar place you've been sitting in.

Be patient with results, be wildly impatient with action. The person I was at 18 — diagnosed with panic disorder, never kissed a girl, rushing to urgent care because I was too afraid to talk to women — I barely recognize him. What changed wasn't my looks, wasn't my money, wasn't my circumstances. What changed was I decided to stop waiting for permission to go after what I wanted, and I started just going for it.

Wherever you're starting from, you can do this too. But only if you actually start.

Bottom Line: Your First Week Action Plan

Think Back List the last five women you were attracted to. How many actually rejected you versus how many did you never approach? That's your self-rejection count.
Pick Your Three Environments One daytime, one social, one activity-based. Schedule four sessions per week. Put them in your calendar right now.
Set the Lowest Possible Bar Your only goal this first week is to start three conversations with women you find attractive. Not get numbers, not get dates — just conversations.
Use the Warm-Up Protocol Every session, talk to random people first. Get your social energy flowing before you approach the girl you really want.
Stack Wins One at a Time Once you've done three conversations, raise the bar. Get a number. Then get a date. Build the evidence that this works for you until it's undeniable.
